This week we had our annual baptism service. We baptized 18 people total (pictured above)! This brings the total number of baptisms at North Summit to 40 people in just 2 years of ministry!
We strive to make our baptisms feel like a party. We believe baptism is an outward expression of a inward belief in Christ. I will often refer to baptism as the "wedding ring of faith." For example, if I take off my wedding ring, or lose it (heaven forbid) it doesn't mean I'm not married, it also doesn't mean the wedding never happened, but when my ring is on it expresses my vow and unconditional love for my wife. It is an outward expression that shows my love for my wife to the world. Baptism is the outward expression that displays our believe, faith, and love for Christ. There is a lot of different theology and belief out there around baptism but one thing that stays true across them all is that Jesus tells us to do it. In Matthew 28:18 Jesus says "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...." This is our job as believers and our job as a church. This is us being obedient to the mission God has put on all of us.
I'm overwhelmed with excitement at how multi-generational our baptisms are, how impactful they are on our church, and how filled with joy and the Spirit each participant is. When we do baptisms whether it be in service or in the back of a pick up truck (oh right, if you haven't heard, we did that too) you can really feel the presence of the Holy Spirit! Although our faith is not based on feelings, it does feel amazing. If you're on the fence about getting baptized....what are you waiting for? Maybe it's time!
